Wallpaper Installation and Care

How wallpaper is properly installed and cared for in Ghana — wall preparation, hanging, cleaning by type, longevity, and when to call a professional instead of doing it yourself.

Wallpaper Lives or Fails on the Wall Beneath It

The single biggest reason wallpaper lifts, bubbles or peels in Ghana is not the paper — it is the wall it was hung on. A correctly hung wallcovering on a properly prepared wall lasts many years; the same paper rushed onto a dusty or damp wall fails within a season. This guide explains how wallpaper is properly installed and cared for, what you can do yourself, and where a professional makes the difference.

Wallpapers Ghana has prepared, hung and maintained wallcoverings across Accra since 1985.

Wall Preparation — the Step That Matters Most

Check for damp first

Before anything, the wall is checked for damp. No wallcovering corrects a wet wall — the moisture source must be fixed first, or the paper will lift no matter how well it is hung. In coastal Accra and Tema, this check is non-negotiable.

Strip, fill and clean

Old paper is stripped cleanly, cracks and holes are filled and sanded, and the surface is cleaned of dust and grease. A wall hung over old paper or dust is a wall that will bubble.

Size the wall

Sizing seals the surface so the paste bonds evenly and the paper slides into place without tearing or stretching. Skipping sizing is one of the most common causes of poor seams.

Hanging — Doing It Right

Set out from the focal point

The pattern is plumbed and set out from the centre of the wall or the focal point, so the repeat lands correctly and any cut falls in an inconspicuous place, not across the middle of the feature.

Match, hang and roll

Drops are matched to the pattern repeat, pasted — or for non-woven, the wall is pasted (paste-the-wall) — hung, smoothed to drive out air, and the seams are rolled flat so they sit invisibly for years.

Trim and snag

Edges are trimmed clean at the cornice, skirting, switches and sockets. The wall is then snagged for bubbles and lifted seams while the paste is still workable.

Cleaning and Care by Type

How you clean depends on the wallcovering — always check the manufacturer’s washability symbol first:

WallcoveringCleaning
VinylWipe or sponge with mild soapy water; scrubbable grades take a soft brush
Non-wovenDamp-sponge gently; avoid soaking
Textile / grassclothDust or vacuum on low; spot-clean only, never soak
3D PVC panelsWipe clean with a damp cloth

General care: dust gently and regularly, address spills quickly, and keep direct, harsh sunlight off textile finishes to protect colour. See Textile Wallcovering for delicate-finish care.

Longevity — How Long Wallpaper Lasts in Ghana

A well-prepared, correctly hung wall lasts many years. Longevity comes from three things working together:

  • Preparation — a sound, dry, sized wall.
  • The right material for the room — washable vinyl on busy walls, breathable non-woven on humid ones, textile only in dry rooms.
  • Sensible care — gentle, appropriate cleaning and quick attention to spills.

Price is not on that list. A lower-priced roll on a properly prepared wall outlasts an expensive roll on a neglected one.

When to Call a Professional

Some jobs reward doing it yourself; others quietly cost more when done wrong. Call a professional when:

  • The wall has damp, cracks or old paper that need proper remediation.
  • The wallcovering is textile, grasscloth or a bespoke mural — delicate, unforgiving materials where one torn drop is expensive.
  • The pattern has a large or directional repeat that must be set out precisely.
  • The wall is high, around stairs, or full of switches and detail to cut around.
  • The finish needs to last years, not months.

Standards Note

Wallpaper carries no single performance standard. Its substrate, washability and fire class are described qualitatively by the manufacturer on the roll, and durability comes from correct preparation, sizing and seam work — not from a certificate. 3D panels are rated by their manufacturer. We match the product’s rating to the room rather than cite a standard the paper does not hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop wallpaper lifting in Ghana’s humidity?

Start with a dry, sound wall — check and fix any damp first, then strip, fill, clean and size it. Choose a breathable non-woven or washable vinyl where humidity is a factor. Lifting comes from the wall, not the climate alone.

How do I clean wallpaper?

Check the washability symbol first. Vinyl wipes or sponges with mild soapy water; non-woven takes a gentle damp sponge; textile and grasscloth are only dusted or spot-cleaned, never soaked; 3D PVC panels wipe clean.

How long does wallpaper last?

Many years when properly prepared, correctly hung, matched to the room and sensibly cared for. Preparation and the right material matter far more than the price of the roll.

Should I install wallpaper myself?

Simple non-woven on a sound, plain wall can be a careful DIY job. Damp or damaged walls, textile and bespoke materials, large pattern repeats, and high or detailed walls reward a professional — the finish lasts years instead of months.
